HOPEDALE HIGH TEAM LOOKING FOR CIRCUIT TITLE FOR 2ND TIME
November 22, 1961
Ken Boyce
Daily News Staff

Start with a little experience, add a dash of height and top it off with the spirit of new comers; mix together under the guidance of an able person, and the product is success, or so hopes Coach Roger Hebert of Hopedale High basketball team.

The Blue Raiders, stocked with returning veterans, led by co-captains Jake Grady and George Harlow, along with promising talent in the shape of Chuck Espanet and Steve Sardell, sophomores, and Jerry Boyer, a freshman, are going after their second straight Tri-County League Championship.

The Raiders will get their first taste of battle when they take on highly-rated Shrewsbury High in the basketball jamboree slated for Nov. 28.  The Jamboree will be held in the Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon.

“We’re all right,” said Hebert, “Shrewsbury is about four times bigger than we are, but we’ll hold our own.”

Names Line-Up

Expected starters include Bob Scalzi or Dave Calarese at one forward and at the other post, Grady; while playing center will be Harlow, and patrolling the back court will be Don Lutz and Phil Travers.

“We’ve got some pretty good strength in reserve,” said Hebert.  “Dave DiGirolamo is coming along fine and so is Rich Derderian, a transfer student from Worcester, both who could help us a lot.”

The Raider’s first game is against Nipmuc at Mendon.  This game starts the season for real on Dec 8.  Nipmuc and the Alumni game slated for Dec 29 are the only non-league games on the Hopedale schedule.

“The Jamboree will be a valuable thing for us,” said Hebert.  “There have been a few rule changes and the game conditions will give  us a good opportunity to orient ourselves with them.”

Hebert is not going into the Jamboree with the purpose to win at all cost.  “There are 10 kids that I want to see perform rather than sticking strictly with my starting five,” he declared.

1,000 Attend 1st Area Hoop Jamboree
Milford, Hopedale, Bellingham, St. Mary's Win Contests
at Nipmuc Regional High School
November 29, 1961

MENDON - A packed house of 1,000 basketball fans watched the first annual jamboree at Nipmuc Regional High gym here last night and saw Milford High and Hopedale High pull the upsets of the night by beating their opponents in the two eight-minute periods of play alotted.

Hopedale's Blue Raiders edged a highly-touted Shrewsbury High club, 22-20, in the first encounter of the night, while Milford's Scarlets, a team which has had only two practice sessions to date, romped over Uxbridge High, 31-18.

The second tilt of the evening saw a smooth looking St. Mary's Central High of Milford five easily outdistancing Algonquin Regional of Northboro, 33-17, and Bellingham High closed the door on hosting Nipmuc Regional in the nightcap, 25-18.

Jamboree director, Charles Espanet, athletic director at Milford High, termed the evening "a great success," pointing to "fine cooperation among school officials and coaches" as the big factor.

The area's response to this, the first such hoop affair here, was so great that many fans had to be kept waiting outside the building for their particular schools to take the court in order that the fire safety rules would not be infringed.  The 1,000 attendance was spread over the 2 1/2 hour period that the eight teams played.

Plans being formulated for the affair next year point to Shrewsbury High as the host team, which school has a basketball court with a 1,100 seating capacity.

Hopedale vs Shrewsbury

In the initial tilt, Hopedale dominated the first period as guard Phil Travers got his bearings early from the outside, sinking three before the end of the pole.  Blue Raider forward Don Lutz drove for two baskets and team co-captain and forward Jake Grady sunk one.

Shrewsbury's forward Don Kimball, who totaled 13 points in the tilt for high scorer, sunk one basket from the outside and a foul shot.  Guard Jim McNeil sank two and a foul shot, leaving the Blue Raiders with a 12-8 advantage at the end of the period.

In second period of play co-captain center George Harlow got his eye sinking three as the pivot man.  But Shrewsbury's Kimball also sank three in the period, and with three minutes left the Shrewsbury lads tied it up 19-19.

Hopedale's Lutz drove to pop one up which bounced off the rim to lanky Harlow, who dropped it in for the tie-breaker.  A foul shot by Kimball made it 20-19, but Travers came back in the last minute to sink a foul shot for the final score.

Hopedale Drubs Nipmuc
by Ken Boyce
December 9, 1961

MENDON - The Hopedale High basketball team opened its season last night by ripping into the Nipmuc Regional basketball team, 76 - 51, at Nipmuc Regional Gym, with Jake Grady and Phil Travers paving the way.

The Blue Raiders jumped into the lead right from the beginning minute and continued to build on it throughout the remainder of the contest.

This initial win gives the Raiders a perfect 1-0 log while Nipmuc Regional now sports a 1-2 slate.  The game was a non-league match.

The Raiders wasted no time.  Jump shots by Travers and Don Lutz, coupled together with two free throws by George Harlow and Dave Calarese shot the Raiders ahead 6-0.  The Warriors never got any closer to the classy Hopedale five.

Hopedale Bombs

The Hopedale lead fluctuated between six and ten points throughout the first half, ending with Hopedale leading 21-12.

In the third quarter the floodgates opened and the Raiders poured through 26 points to lead at the end of the third quarter 61-38.  Leading the assault was the senior forward Grady with 12 points.

Hopedale showed an all-round powerful club with four men hitting double figures.  Coach Roger Hebert cleared the bench in the last few minutes and where the regulars left off, the seconds more than continued.

Grady, Travers Star

Especially impressive were Grady and Travers.  Grady, the game's leading scorer, became torrid in the third quarter netting 12 of his 19 points.

While Grady scored in spurts, Travers remained constant all night.  He ended the night with 16 points, getting six in the first and second quarters and four in the third.

His pin point jump shot from behind the key hole and some fine play by Lutz carried the Raiders into their opening lead.

The bulk of the Warrior's scoring was furnished by Al Crites and Paul Usher both netting 15.

The Raiders used an all court press through much of the game doing much to stifle the Nipmuc offensive.

Jay Vee Tilt

In the preliminary, the Hopedale Junior Raiders made it a clean sweep by defeating Nipmuc Jay Vees 44-31.

Jerry Boyer and Chuck Espanet led the attack getting 11 an 10 points respectively.

The top man for Nipmuc was Porter with 9.

HOPEDALE, BELLINGHAM BIDDING FOR TITLE
Blue Raiders Can Tie For First; Blackhawks Can Win It Tomorrow
February 15, 1962

The coveted title of the Tri-County Basketball League will be on the block tomorrow night.

The bidders are undefeated Bellingham High and once-beaten Hopedale High, the latter the loop defending champion, having copped the crown for the past two years in succession.

More than 500 persons are expected to pack Bellingham High's gym tomorrow night, rooting for one of two possibilities; a win by Bellingham to cop the title or a win by Hopedale to round off a first place tie.

The game will follow a JayVee preliminary encounter slated for 7 p.m.

Contacted last night, the respective coaches were as night and day in their feelings as the big entanglement looms.  Bellingham Blackhawk coat Frank Flynn, other than mentioning his probably starters, had a flat and conservative "no comment" when asked how things were shaping up.  Hopedale's Roger Hebert was to say the least, more specific, "I think we'll take 'em," he asserted, adding, "We look the best we've been all season."

Those were strong words from the coach of the club whose only loss was to the Blackhawks earlier this year, 62-56.  Bellingham presently brandishes a 20-0 mark, while the Blue Raiders wield a slightly lesser 18-1 tally.

Hebert claimed good reasons to back up his prediction, however, pointing out, "We lost the game at the foul line.  We were fouling too much. I know we're not making the fouls we were making then."

Grady In Lineup

He went on to note that in the January 9 tilt with Bellingham the Blue Raiders were operating wihtou the aid of guard Jake Grady, sick at the time, who means almost everything to the Hopedale quintet under the boards.

The Hopedale mentor's probably starters include Phil Travers and Don Lutz at forwards, George Harlow at center, and Grady and Dave Calarese at the guard positions.

Travers, Lutz and Harlow are the 1-2-3 scoring punch on the Blue Raider team, with Lutz and Travers trading the top scoring positions in their games.  Calarese stands out as the playmaker of the club, setting up a multitude of plays and variations.

The key to the Bellingham offense is center George Laprade, who in the first encounter with Hopedale tallied 20 points, sharing top scoring honors with teammate guard Tommy Tremba, another Bellingham sharpshooter, who also amassed 21 points in the tilt.

Bellingham Starters

Flynn's probable starters are Rhoads and Tom Bonollo at forwards, Laprade at center, and Randell and Tremba in the back court.

The game tomorrow evening is seen as the biggest of the year in the local area, stealing the spotlight even from the Milford Town series between Milford High and St. Mary's, this year a somewhat one-sided affair with the Saints a heavy favorite.

The Bellingham-Hopedale tilt, however, has captured the hoop spotlight, especially with the league champion of two years doing defense of its title to a Bellingham club which in previous years had dominated the circuit under the fiery leadership of Coach Frank Flynn, without a doubt one of most colorful hoop mentors in the area.

BELLINGHAM TAKES TITLE, WHIPS HOPEDALE 64-55
Bonollo scores 29, LaPrade 21, Lead Quintet to Victory
February 16, 1962

BELLINGHAM - Undefeated Bellingham High basketball team won the Tri-County League title by defeating defending champions Hopedale High 64-55 before an overflow crowd in the Bellingham gym last night.  This was the Blackhawks 21st win of the season setting a school record.

Forward Jim Bonollo and Capt. George Laprade scored 29 and 21 points respectively to lead all scorers.

The Bellingham jayvees also made it a clean sweep by defeating Hopedale jayvees 42-40. This was the first loss for the Hopedale team in 46 games, since 1959.

The game, a thriller, was not decided until the last two minutes of play when Bonollo of the Blackhawks scored six consecutive foul shots.

Led by LaPrade the Blackhawks jumped into an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play before Phil Travers of Hopedale sank a two pointer.  Bonollo and Laprade each scored seven points before the period ended with the Blackhawks in front, 18-10.

The Hopedale Raiders narrowed the gap during the second quarter with Travers, Don Lutz and George Harlow each scoring four points apiece, while holding the Blackhawks to 10 points.

The score at halftime with the Blackhawks leading was 28-23.

Holding the Blackhawks scoreless during the first four minutes of play in the third period, the Raiders pulled into a 30-28 lead for the first time.  With three minutes left to play in the quarter the Raiders had built a 36-31 lead with Travers and Jake Grady sparking the drive.

The Blackhawks fought back with Bonollo connecting on two field goals and a foul shot to push his team into a one point lead at the end of the period, 41-40.

The lead changed hands several times during the first four minutes of play in the final stanza.  Hopedale suffered a big loss in the last two minutes of play as center Harlow and Dave Calarese both committed their fifth personal foul and had to leave the game.

Bonollo and LaPrade sparked the last period for the Blackhawks scoring 12 and eight points respectively.

Bonollo connected for 10 points from the foul line which clinched the victory for  for his team during the period.

HOPEDALE OUSTED BY NORTHBRIDGE, 45-21
Sluggish Blue Raiders Never in Tourney Tilt
Gerry Gawalt/Daily News Staff
February 1962

The Northbridge High basketball team hewed themselves a slot in the second round of the Western Mass. Tournament by carving out a victory over a belted Hopedale High five, 45-21, at the Algonquin Regional gym in Northboro Saturday night.

One of the most poorly played games of the season, before a crowd of over 300, saw the Raiders held to a mere two points in the first period, while the Rams could muster only 11.

Leading the scoring for the clubs was Joe Roy of Northbridge with 17 points followed by his teammate, "Wheels" Wheeler, with 14.  No man hit double figures for Hopedale, and Phil Travers led the local scoring with nine.

The Raiders, seeming awed by the tournament label, had their "big" scoring binge in the second period when they netted 10 points.  Two of these were scored by their opponents in on the infrequent "battles under the boards."

Northbridge, meanwhile, had picked up 11 in the first pole, with Roy threading eight, and eight in the second marker with Wheeler hooping in three.

Disputed Call

A dispute between Coach Roger Hebert of Hopedale and the officials arose when the referees ruled that a tap-in was "no good" a split second before the buzzer sounded.  Their somewhat confused explanation was that had the tap-in been a "shot," the basket would have been counted.

In the third marker the Rams' Roy opened up again to gather six points and lead his team to a 33-14 advantage at the end of that go-round.  Hopedale matched its first quarter output of tow points, this time scored by Travers.

Desperately fighting to get back into the game, the Raiders ran up six straight points at the start of the finale but followed the effort up with a pittance of two more to close out their scoring.

Urged on by their wildly cheering fans, the Rams racked up 11 markers to win the contest, it if ever was a contest, going away.

Both coaches sent in their second team in the waning minutes of play.

The Raiders finished up the season with a 17-4 record, while Northbridge now sports a neat 19-0 slate and faces Commerce High of Worcester in the second round of the schoolboy tournament.

Bellingham, Hopedale in All-Star Wins in Millis
Post Easy Victories; 64-34 for Hopedale

February 1962

MILLIS - Both Bellingham High and Hopedale High, the 1-2, respectively, top teams in the Tri-county League, had an easy time of it Saturday night, sweeping the loop's annual Sports Night in games played against two of the league's All-Star teams.

League champions Bellingham neatly polished off All-Star quintet No. 1 with a decisive 71-56 score, while the Hopedale five clobbered All-Star team No. 2 with a 64-34 result.

The games were played here at the Millis High Gym.

Neither of the top teams had the least bit trouble in subduing their opponents, teams of which were made up of the best players of the several quintets which finished behind Bellingham and Hopedale in the league standings this season.

More than 500 spectators watched as Hopedale, playing in the first game of the night, fashioned an early lead posting period scores of 17-6, 33-12, and 46-22.

Travers High Man

Hopedale's forward Phil Travers copped high scoring honors in the first game as he netted 18 points, followed closely by his teammate center George Harlow with a 17-point tally.  The Blue Raiders forward Don Lutz was third high man with 12 points,   High scorer for the All-Stars was Holliston High's guard Higgins with eight points.

Travers got his team off to a good start in the first period as he poured in six points for Hopedale, while the All-Stars' guard Watson of Millis High netted four points.  In second period play Harlow dropped in eight points for the Blue Raiders, while Medfield's McMahan kept his five somewhat in contention with a four-point tally for the quarter.  Travers and Harlow combined to toss in four points apiece in the third frame, while Higgins twined the net for six points for the All-Stars.  The same combination of Harlow-Travers had eight points in the final also, this time strengthened by an additional four from Lutz.  Norfolk's forward Maxcy was strongest for the All-Stars in the final period as he netted four points.
